||
One of my pals here in the English Department at the College Just South of the Hill was the subject of a [very odd feature](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2003-apr-27-ca-brown27-story.html "L.A. Times") in this past Sunday’s *L. A. Times*. Needless to say, things have been weird in the hallowed halls this week, not least because of our discovery that we’re in a — and I quote — “geographically undesirable place from which to generate attention.” Because, you know, we’re 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles, and civilization pretty much stops 25 miles out.

I’m not sure, though, whether yesterday’s [correction](http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/asection/la-a2-correx30.10apr30,1,3496570.story "L.A. Times, part two") makes things better or worse.
