So [word](http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/54609) is spreading throughout the [blogosphere](http://www.unfogged.com/archives/week_2006_09_03.html#005422) this morning that the [Lonelygirl15](http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=lonelygirl15) phenomenon was [produced](http://www.lonelygirl15.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=36) (actually, that link seems to have disappeared, at least for the moment, perhaps victim of a metafiltering) by a group of filmmakers with a connection to a major Hollywood [talent agency](http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-lonelygirl8sep08,0,5310001.story?coll=la-home-entertainment). And around the net, folks are crying “fraud,” “sham,” “bogus,” etc.
Its that reaction that drives me a bit up a tree: not the drive to find out whos actually making the videos, but the conviction that, if they arent in fact the home-brewed product of a 16 year old girl who is exactly who and what she claims to be, theyre a lie, and of no value whatsoever. Ill blow this particular horn as often as I need towhich, alas, seems to be pretty oftenbut honestly, folks: have we never heard of *fiction*? Thats the thing where somebody makes up a story because its (a) entertaining, or (b) edifying, or (c) both of the above. Why have we as a culture gotten so locked in to the notion that the only value in narrative is truth value, and that the only truth value is that which can be demonstrated to be verifiably “real”? Are we all really that literal?
Id go on, but Im in a bit of a rush. Instead Ill direct you to past maunderings on this issue, [here](/synthesis/), [here](/on_the_truth_value_of_memoir/), and [here](/frey_them/).
